Gluten-free foods is becoming a diet craze as many people consider a gluten-free diet to be a healthy one. However, doctors and nutritionist warn the general public about this.

Gluten-free diet is a solution for people who have celiac disease, an autoimmune digestive ailment. Gluten is a protein that is commonly found in wheat. If people with celiac disease eat foods that contain gluten, their immune systems makes an abnormal response by destroying the villi in the small intestine. The villi is responsible for the absorption of nutrients into the bloodstream, and its destruction will cause a person to become malnourished.

 

A Fad Diet

These days there is a growing misconception that going gluten-free will benefit health, even to people who do not suffer from celiac disease. Loads of gluten-free foods and products are now being marketed to the general population.

Restaurants offer gluten-free foods such as pizza and main dishes for customers with celiac disease, but even non-sufferers order these due to the growing diet trend and massive misinformation among the public.

 

Unfavorable Weight Loss Practice

The reason why many people jump into the gluten-free bandwagon is to lose weight. For most of these people, going gluten-free entails avoiding certain foods such as desserts and junk food; thus, they end up losing their excess weight.

Nutritionists caution the general public about the diet. Gluten-free foods are only for celiac-disease sufferers and can be extremely unhealthy for non-sufferers.

These foods and products are mostly made with refined grains, which are very low in essential nutrients such as fiber, folate, iron, thiamine, niacin, vitamin B12, calcium, phosphorus and zinc. Choosing to eat these foods means depriving yourself with important nutrients, which could eventually lead to health problems.

 

Be Enlightened

Doctors and nutritionists say that if you do not have celiac disease or any sensitivity to gluten and wheat, you will not benefit from eating gluten-free foods. Losing weight can be achieved by eating a well-balanced, nutritious meal.
